Hi, I’m Emmett Chappelle MD

Background

My journey toward becoming a psychiatrist began in childhood. I was raised by a blind mother, which gave me a deep understanding of empathy, responsibility, and service. That early experience shaped my lifelong commitment to helping others move through the world with dignity and purpose.

Experience & Qualifications

I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Augustana University. After graduation, I returned home to help my mother and worked in direct patient care roles—including home health aide, certified nursing assistant, radiology assistant, and medication aide. These experiences gave me valuable insight into the challenges people face navigating the healthcare system.

I completed medical school and psychiatry residency at the Sanford School of Medicine, gaining experience in outpatient, inpatient, and emergency psychiatric care. After completing my residency, I became board-certified and joined a Minnesota-based health system as an outpatient adult psychiatrist, where I focused on delivering thoughtful, individualized mental health care.

Professional Interests

My clinical interests center on treatment-resistant depression, psychiatric care for adults with an established autism diagnosis, and the careful de-prescribing of long-term psychiatric medications. I am particularly focused on patients whose symptoms persist despite multiple medication trials, whose diagnoses warrant reassessment, or whose treatment has become complicated by polypharmacy and cumulative side effects. My work emphasizes diagnostic clarity, longitudinal formulation, and deliberate medication decision-making rather than rapid trial-and-error prescribing.

My Approach

As a psychiatrist, I take a comprehensive, whole-person approach to mental health. I consider biological, psychological, social, and environmental factors to build a personalized treatment plan. Care may include therapy, lifestyle changes, and, when appropriate, medication.

Medication is never the sole focus—I aim to use the lowest effective dose when it’s needed. I believe the best outcomes come from a collaborative relationship where your goals and voice shape the path forward.
